Luton Clinical Commissioning Group (LCCG) have been shortlisted for two categories inthe 2018 HSJ Value Awards.

The awards acknowledge the excellent use of resources of the Unplanned Care Team to improve outcomes for patients in Luton.

The categories that LCCG has been shortlisted for an award in, are:

·        The use of information technology to drive value in clinical services

·        And Emergency, Urgent and Trauma Care

LCCG in partnership with Consultant Connect, Luton and Dunstable Hospital (L&D) and Cambridgeshire Community Services (CCS), have supported avoiding up to 5,900 A&E attendances over the last two years by the use of ‘Urgent Connect’ technology, allowing GP practices to connect directly to the CCS GP Liaison Team and a Paediatric Assessment Unit at the Luton & Dunstable Hospital (L&D).

The GP Liaison Team and Paediatric Assessment Unit have helped to introduce a faster more efficient assessment of referrals to the L&D. This one-to-one service has been tailored to assist GPs and other healthcare providers to ensure patients receive the right care in the right place.

The Urgent Connect technology, gives clinicians access to advice from local specialty clinicians and immediate signposting advice, allowing them to direct their patients towards the appropriate healthcare facilities.

Commenting on the award shortlisting, Caroline Capell, Assistant Director of Unplanned Care for LCCG, said: “We have often faced challenges with our urgent GP referrals into the acute trust so to help combat the challenges we have been working closely in partnership with Consultant Connect, the Luton & Dunstable Hospital and Cambridgeshire Community Services for the past two years. The service and support offered by the partnership has been excellent and we have helped local clinicians make the most of the technology available to provide a fast, effective pathway for patients”.

Jonathan Patrick, from Consultant Connect, said: “We are very pleased to have been shortlisted for two HSJ awards in partnership with Luton CCG. When we were approached by LCCG to support Urgent Care pathways from GP practices into A&E it gave us an opportunity to work together to develop Consultant Connect for Emergency care. The results have been outstanding working with CCS and the L&D to make this work for Luton and being shortlisted for 2 awards helps cement how good this work has been”

The final round of judging starts on 4 April. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Manchester on 7 June.
